Papas (Potatoes)
Potatoes, which are a very popular crop were first grown in Peru (Food). The oldest potatoes found in Peru date all the way back to 400 B.C. ! It took the Europeans until the year 1400 A.D. to come in contact with the potato that was well known to the Peruvians. After it was found by the Europeans, it became one of the most popular crops in the world.
Peru is still the source of the widest variety of potatoes and is sometimes called the “Potato Capital of the World” (Food). Due to the growth and use of potatoes the vegetable is very common in the Peruvian diet and is considered a very important piece of their culture. Potatoes are used in many recipes in Peru as well as the US, Europe, and many Spanish speaking countries.
Potatoes are actually a root of a plant and Peru they are very easily grown because they are not hard to maintain. The only major necessity is that they must have sunlight and they are planted in moist, loose soil.
